As tourists travel to a destination, they often plan to visit specific sites in that region or city. It’s common for these travelers to explore one of the magnificent cathedrals in that city.
But do those cathedrals point people to the powerful and loving God, or do they muffle and confuse people when it comes to how they see God?
“Delight thyself also in the LORD: and He shall give thee the desires of thine heart.” Psalm 37:4
This verse puzzled me for a long time. What exactly is “delighting” in the Lord? And if I’m delighting in the Lord, then will all my desires be fulfilled? Taking this verse stand-alone sounds a lot like “name it, claim it” theology, and we know that type of false teaching doesn’t square with the Bible.
So what does Psalm 37:4 really say?
I’ve found myself really thinking about this whole “empty nest” paradigm. As I’ve been searching the Scriptures and praying about this new adventure, I’ve discovered a few truths that have been encouraging to me. Col. Steve Martin reminds us that our nation was founded on the cornerstone of the great pilgrim quest to worship God without the constraint of government. In recent years, we’ve seen a shocking decline in the moral standard in our country. It has predictably mirrored the decline in church attendance and the ability of the church to maintain influence on the moral compass of our nation.
What are some words that come to mind when you hear the word anchored? I’ve thought of some synonyms: steadfast, stable, grounded, steady, secure, firm, unwavering, and sure. And I can’t think of a better place to find those things for life than in God’s Word.
Intentionally or not, you are a theologian. But what do we mean by that?
It’s easy to get wrapped up in the allure of vacation mode—enjoying the change of pace, the peace, and the relaxation. The thought of returning to work, school, busyness, messiness, and the general monotonous aspects of life can easily become a dread.
But as Christians, it’s important to remember that our ultimate purpose in life is not to follow after temporary pleasures or seek comfort and relaxation.
In a few weeks, thirty-eight of our students are preparing to cross the platform and receive their diplomas. As they begin their own great journey, they too will need a North Star by which to navigate successfully. Our prayer is that our students, and us too, will avoid the trap of self-navigating this life with feelings, opinions, and emotions as their guides. We pray that they will start on the right course, stay on the right course, and direct others to the right course as they live the lives God has created them for.
