Changing Seasons, Unchanging God

“To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.” – Ecclesiastes 3:1

Life is full of change.

Just as nature goes through seasons of spring, summer, fall, and winter, we too experience seasons in our lives. Some are filled with joy, growth, and abundance, while others are marked by challenges, loss, or waiting.

But through every shift and transition, there is one truth we can hold onto:

God never changes—He is always the same.

Hebrews 13:8

Embracing the Changing Seasons

When we think of the seasons, we often associate them with different experiences.

Spring may represent new beginnings, as flowers bloom and life awakens.

Summer could symbolize a season of abundance, when we feel the warmth of blessings.

Fall might remind us of transitions and the letting go of what was…

And winter often brings thoughts of stillness, rest, or perhaps a time of waiting.

In our lives, we move through similar patterns. There are moments when God plants something new in our hearts, seasons where we feel and experience the fullness of His provision, and times when He asks us to surrender and trust in His timing.

It can be difficult to navigate the “winters” of life, but we can find comfort knowing that no matter what season we find ourselves in, God is with us (Deuteronomy 31:6; Hebrews 13:5).

God’s Faithfulness in Every Season

In Deuteronomy 7:9, we are reminded of God’s unwavering faithfulness:

“Know therefore that the Lord thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations.”

God doesn’t change.

Period.

His promises remain true through every circumstance.

Just as the seasons come and go in nature, the challenges and joys we face in life are part of a greater purpose that God is weaving together for the good of all believers (Romans 8:28). When we experience times of waiting or hardship, it’s easy to wonder if God is still at work.

But thankfully His faithfulness is not dependent on our circumstances; it is rooted in His eternal, immutable character.

Even when we can’t see how, God is working behind the scenes, preparing us for what’s next, growing us in the stillness, and refining our faith in the valleys.

He is our constant anchor, unshaken by the storms of life.

Trusting God in the Transition

Ecclesiastes 3:11 tells us, “He hath made everything beautiful in his time.”

Change can be uncomfortable, especially when we feel like we’re in a season of uncertainty. We may not understand why certain things happen or why some prayers seem unanswered, but God’s timing is always perfect (read the book of Habakkuk).

If you are in a season of waiting, remember that God is still faithful.

If you are in a season of loss or heartache, His presence is your comfort.

And if you are in a season of joy and abundance, give thanks, knowing that God’s hand is at work in every blessing (James 1:17).

No season lasts forever, but God’s love and faithfulness remain steadfast.

How Do We Respond?

In every season, our response should be one of trust and gratitude.

Here are some ways we can anchor ourselves in God’s faithfulness, no matter the season we find ourselves in:

  1. Seek God’s presence daily – In times of joy or struggle, draw near to God. Spend time in prayer and in God’s Word, letting His promises and peace strengthen you.
  2. Reflect on His past faithfulness – Remember the times when God has been faithful to you in the past. Let those memories remind you that He will continue to be faithful in the present and the future. Perhaps even keep a journal to reflect back on throughout the year.

  1. Stay connected with community – Surround yourself with fellow believers who can encourage you and walk alongside you through every season.
  2. Be patient in the waiting – Trust that God’s timing is perfect, even when we cannot see the full picture (Psalm 18:30).

God Is Unchanging

Though the seasons of life will continue to shift, God remains the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). He is faithful to His promises, faithful to His love, and faithful to complete the good work He has begun in us (Philippians 1:6).

So, as the seasons come and go, let us rest in the knowledge that God is always with us.

His faithfulness endures through every storm and every sunny day.

We may not know what tomorrow holds, but

But we know who holds tomorrow,
And we know Who holds our hand.

Ira F. Stanphill (made plural for quote purposes)

“This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope. It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.” – Lamentations 3:21-23
