Planting Seeds and Building Bridges: Vacation Bible School
When I was little—and even now—I looked forward to the summer. The school year was officially over. It was time for vacations and a time to forget about school. I was anxious to play outside with my neighbors, to head out on a special trip with my family, or to finally get a chance to spend the night at my cousin’s or my grandparents’ house. It was a time of relaxation from schedules—a time to decompress.
One of my favorite summertime memories is Vacation Bible School. Through the years, I’ve been to quite a variety of them! It’s one of those special weeks that offers children the opportunity to deepen their faith, build lasting friendships, and create unforgettable memories that hopefully will stay with them long after summer’s end. The atmosphere was filled with laughter, enthusiasm, and a sense of community as children came together to explore biblical stories and Christian values in a fun and welcoming way.
I can remember vividly some of the silly skits that were done at the start of each night, the crafts made from pipe cleaners and macaroni noodles—and don’t forget the glitter—and the lessons taught about Bible truths and Bible heroes. Whether it was a tropical island adventure, a space exploration, or a journey through the Outback, the immersive themes helped to keep these memories fresh. It was a week of spiritual growth, of adventure, and of connection that has left a lasting impact on this young person’s heart and mind. These moments stick with me even today, and there’s a reason why.
Vacation Bible School is like a cool drink of water on a hot summer day. It’s that needful spiritual refreshment and spiritual recharging for the children in our church as well as those in our community. It’s a time to meet new friends, a time to play, and a time to snack. But most importantly, it’s a time to plant seeds in little hearts (Matthew 13:23) and to build bridges within our community for the sake of the gospel as we seek to partner together in the building of God’s kingdom.

Throughout the week of VBS, please remember to pray for:
1. clarity and spiritual understanding of the content of the Bible lessons and verses being taught
2. a positive attitude of excitement and enthusiasm as well as physical stamina for each worker
3. safety and health for all the workers and students
4. children and families that don’t know the good news of the gospel to come and hear
5. relationships to be developed with the families of the children
